first NO i wasn't able to get off from work and travel to NYC to see it myself...but i sure wish i woulda been able to...

grabbed these snippetts from Okayplayer...

"one of the best shows i've ever been to.

just wow.

the absolute highlight was when Robert & Meshell did a rendition of I Can't Help It by Michael Jackson...i'm getting chills right now from the memory. It was beautiful, haunting and funky all at once...heads were bobbing all over the place...

Robert Glasper is a phenomenal pianist. I had no idea about this guy...and he's so young! 27 I think...Lionel doesn't just play the guitar, he P L A Y S it. like every bit of it. Like its 4 separate instruments, with one being a drum. AND he uses his voice to accent it...and we all know how flawless and soulful Meshell is on bass. Its always hard to take my eyes off her...

AND we were treated to a surprise guest. Chris "Daddy" Dave joined the trio but they didn't have drums. No problem. Robert set up an sheet music stand, gave him 2 pens, a piece of paper folded in half, and a microphone on the floor by his right foot (the KICK!!). Instant drums. We were all blown away...THIS MOFO IS PLAYING AN SHEET MUSIC STAND and sounding like he's on a drumset.

i
love
music"

"AMEN!!!

Best acoustic jazz show ive been to in a loooooooooong time

both tunes i was in musical bliss...Tell Me Bedtime Story AND I Can't Help It

Robert is definitely slept on! and a comedian too...
cop both his albums if you aint got it!

Lionel went there with it...e'en i was like Robert when he did whatever he did with the guitar at one point..."was that you?!"

i'm still smh @ two pens and STILL was rocking..."

""yo.

ion't really know what to add tht ain' been so succinctly stated already above.

i've seen prince, miles davis, maybe 20-30 herbie concerts, and most quality/classic hip-hop artists.

i ain' anticipate that something so conceptually simple would eclipse those performances. it's a tragedy that interplay of the kind each musician displayed on monday has almost disappeared.

that sh:t was telepathic, yo. i was finna faint by 'naima'."

"and to think we almost didn't go.

we know better now

but yeah their telepathy was magical. I still feel like such a neophyte when it comes to jazz...i wish i could hear it the way you do but i'm learning more every day"

"i can't believe the thought even crossed our mind.

you can teach someone names/sessions/titles/standards, but you can't teach them how to listen.

you already ahead in the game..."

...sounds like this was something very VERY special for those lucky enough to be there doesn't it?

wow. i'm jealous as hell...

i also just realized (after the fact) i probably shoulda posted this in the 'concerts' section huh?...(sorry bout that m)
