Before I take some time to write down my impressions about this great concert, I wanted to share with you this videoI've just found on youtube... It's the second "encore" and it caused my-Prince-fan-girlfriend's screamings which you can hear at the very start.. Sorry for your eardrums...

Audio...Part 1 (it's in lossless WAV format to maintain highest quality possible...so it's a big file...but i think well worth it
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=ZM9I9ZYZ (I'll up Part2 later...and thanks to the kind person who originally shared this with me 'finkployd49') |

Audio...Part 2....not as big a file as Part 1, but still big and still worth it..
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=FKKSZ5O5 btw both Parts 1 & 2 can both fit together on one cd when you burn it...enjoy folks! I actually haven't even had a chance to fully listen to the whole thing yet myself, so I'm off to go do that now... |

heheh....hey m, i know i gotta share this with the FMH family first & ASAP ...because i know there are many out there who are music junkies just like me, so we're all just making sure each other gets their fixes satisfied
heheh...actually, my wife does jokingly call me a 'music pusher' so the analogy rings true Hey Sebastien, since you were at this one, can you confirm a few things? (A) Since it seems Mark Kelly had airline issues, who played bass in his absence? Did Chris Bruce and Meshell take turns or was it Chris the whole show? (B) do i have the songs in the right order? One of the sources i got this from had 'the Sloganeer' listed as the last song, with 'Critics' coming before it...but when i was doing my initial breeze-over listen to get track names it sounded like Critics should have come last...(and now that i think about it your post above says 'Critics' was the second encore so perhaps i got it right when i switched those last two tracks? Anyway as i said, since you were there you would know best so let us know what you remember about that. Man, so i have now listened to the whole thing (and it sounds really good too so thanks again to 'finkployd49' for sharing it in the first place)...so after listening, i tell ya...even short a missing bandmate due to flight issues, and even with the normal second guitarist having to put his axe down (i assume) and play bass instead...even with all of that unexpected stuff thrown in... ...what a KICK ASS SHOW!!! If they are rocking this good at this point withOUT the entire band in place, just imagine when they get Mark Kelly back! Love this set, and Meshell seems to be in really good spirits in spite of any unplanned wrenches thrown into the mix. She seems to like playing over there and the crowd seems very open to hearing all of the super new stuff. i tell ya...so much to listen to...not enough time...it's the curse we all happily have i suppose later folks! Hello Dereck !
Thanks for this (thanks to finkployd49, too) I am still downloading it but I'm know I won't be decieved ! A- they were only 4 on stage : Meshell, Deantony Parks on drums, Oren Bloedow on guitar (standing on the right side) and Chris Bruce on the left side. No Mark Kelley, as you said ! Bass was played either by Meshell or by Chris Bruce depending on the songs. That was one interesting point of this show : meshell played bass while singing much more often than usually ! So, now we know that she can manage it !! B- I do confirm that "critics" came AFTER "Sloganeer". You can notice that on this very last song (so i'm talking about "critics"...) Oren Bloedow took the bass and Chris Bruce played this funky rythm guitar part ! Well now that you have the sound, I guess my impressions on the show are less expected, but anyway, I was really happy with it : At first, a guy I can't remember the name (does somebody have it ?) opened the show, alone with his electric guitar and nice bluesy folk songs : his way of playing the guitar reminded me of Chris Whitley (who was really a great player... Does anyone like him, here ?) After a long break, Meshell and her 3 musicians came on the scene, and strangely, meshell sat on a chair with her bass and started playing very softly : it was the beginning Fool of me and since she continued with Faithfull, it was really surprising to me : I thought I would never hear those "oldies" anymore, so, hearing back these Bitter songs live was a great moment !! The begining of the show was very different from what we've heard here from Chicago or Detroit : it was very soft and tender. I was really surprised (happily) by this start and really didn't expect this ! Well, I now know after being at something like 10 of her shows, that we definitely mustn't expect anything but really come to her with an opened mind and take everything she gives us : I was never decieved ! And I would even say that this is one reason why and like her so much : every show is always a surprise. Then she left her chair and stood for Virgo and went back to the same soft mood with shirk : I was really close to the stage (first raw actually, at the center) and I could see her face really well : the way she was living her song from the inside was so moving. I really almost cry on this song !! Well I won't go on with all the songs, but there was really a lot of emotion on the begining of this show ! I really enjoyed this reduced band : the songs were nicely highlighted. The last time I saw her was in 2006 (Pais again) and the band seemed to go into too many directions at the same time... On this tour, I think that she has really found her sound back, which is quite different from before but as coherent and personal as it it used to be on the 99 or 2000 shows ! Unfortunately, I didn't manage to take the photos you asked for, Matthew (security guys were not very easy going), but anyway, the lights were very low, and I think that my camera wouldn't have made it. Well thank you again for the sound : I now listen to it : the sound is quite good !! |

Hi there,
This is my first post in here so i wanted to thank u guys for your sharing spirit and all the informations you give us tour after tour. Actually i've had the chance to see Meshell perform in Paris since her first gig in 1993 and it always blew me away. The 11-25 show at Elysée Montmartre, as well as the last june show at La Cigale, were some of my favorites. Even if i don't feel personaly that "The world" is her best album (Cookie is my personal favorite), the energy, the tightness and the sound of the band make my musical dreams come true. Only Prince in 1987 and in aftershows in 1994 made me so confident. Well, i'm talking about myself - All the Critics was played during the second encore. - Don't no if Mark Kelly was there but all i can say is that the band was composed of 4 individuals in all Meshell included. Does that mean that he wasn't present ? More generally, i'm really interested - as we all are in here - in hearing some new live stuff. Maybe i can help this by trading some stuff... Bye then. |

Wow, what a treat those songs from Bitter are! And "all the critics love you in NY" - love her little dig at prince in the intro.
Meshell has been playing some great covers lately. |

Thanks for posting your review Sebastien (& Doinel too)...even though we have the audio of the music itself I still personally am also always very interested to here peoples own personal reflections & perspectives on how the music and concert experience hit them, so thanks again for the insights from the show! (& for the video too!)
