ok now you two, if ya'll cant share the inside joke with the rest of us then you're just gonna have to keep it to yourselves Smile

seriously though, just like i said in my initial post on this show...Deshigrrl i am with you...the guitar work on these tracks is just SO satisfying to me. I love the tone, texture and energy of it as part of these tunes. It really helps make them soar...

I tell ya, the different complimenting textures of all the different instruments are JUST right...very VERY exciting and ALIVE. I am LOVING the structures and energy of the stuff... how the vocal melodies and choruses often establish 'the vibe' and then a tune will evolve into nice long instrumental interplay sections where the band expands on the theme that was set...

DAMN i LOVE this shit.

I LOVE great music!

i think i've had a perpetual grin on my face since i first got ahold of this set...

well...i for one hope that she didn't fire this crew...cuz to my ears they are really smoking on this set...lots of raw power and energy and emotion (the emotion coming from the guitar playing is really special)...its an exciting mix of textures...and considering this is a relatively early gig in the mini tour...whew...the sky's the limit...

btw in case folks get here late i've upped wests show again at the following link...good for another 7 days from today 6/16...

sorry matthew... i have zero information on meshell's current management or band situation; anything i say is just as speculative as anyone else up here on the board. i come here because i remain passionate about her music and, despite your understandable frustrations, this remains the place to be for those of us in the world that have been touched by meshell's art. all that to say, besides gilmar, i wouldah moved on to the next band too Wink

so... from what i can tell there's dana (drums), gilmar (percussion), and michael (guitar).

i'm at a loss for the rest of the band. not even sure if sy or lysette is joining her for the upcoming u.s. dates...

i don't get it.

thanks kt.

Hey Derek, I am still listening to the "Live in Rome" Music of Meshell and I guess your titles are close to what the titles of the songs maybe, but when I wrote my titles down they went a little like this:

1.Waiting for you
2.part 2(You're Worth the wait)
3.Point of no return
4.Come smoke my herb
5.part 2(That's some good herb)
6.Love song #1
7.Headlines
8.Evolution
9.Guide me/Inst.(I feel Jimi)

The band - currently in the process of working out the new music are:
Meshell, vocals, bass, guitar
Michael Severson, guitar
Mark Kelley, bass
Dana Hawkins, drums
Daniel Jones, keys
Gilmar Gomes, percussion

When the opportunity arises ...
Sy Smith, vocals

As with any truly creative process it takes time to work out the right way to move forward. It's a delicate process involving the right blend of personalities, energy and timing.

The new music - like all of her previous work - is complex, beautiful and demanding for any player — no matter their perceived level of 'talent' when judged as a stand-alone player — and finding just the right combination of all of the aforementioned ingredients is... something that's going to be great to watch unfold.

The recording is the final stages of being mixed.
No release date has been set as yet. We would like to properly set up the release of this project, this music is important and it deserves to be respectfully set up and released as such.

BTW - No One in Meshell's camp has lost sight of the truth in her art and they are working hard to ensure that as little as possible gets lost in translation.

Also, setlist for Rome is as follows:
1. Tariq (Love Song #4) followed by solo
2. Point Of No Return
3. Come Smoke My Herb
4. Love Song #1
5. Headline
6. Evolution
7. Blacknuss

Personnel for Rome:
Michael Severson, guitar
Mark Kelley, bass
Adam Deitch, drums
Daniel Jones, keys
Gilmar Gomes, percussion

ese, with the above in mind, please allow me to make a suggestion. i understand how difficult it is to create a new band, especially for meshell, and i also understand how much pressure there can be to play gigs, both internally and externally. and, of course, people are excited to hear new material. with that said, a balance needs to be found between fufilling this need for what is essentially live rehearsal and setting up the album. and what i mean by this is that it is critical that the markets that will anchor your tour in the future, i.e., NY, LA, SF, D.C., ATL, CHI, London, Paris, do not get flooded. Every ticket-selling gig gets counted, goes on the record, and then is used by future promoters to determine your guarantees. So while it is easy to set up a little gig at Joe's Pub in nyc or at Temple in LA, and it seems necessary so the band can get essentially a paid rehearsal-- and since money does not exist to just pay everybody to rehearse for two weeks, which is what meshell really needs-- doing so simultaneously undercuts the future tour, which means crippling an important aspect of the set up for the album.

assuming you cannot secure 10k from the label to rehearse for a week, the balance, i believe, is to do it old school. find a bar or a super tiny spot (75-150 max) that is not necessarily a music venue and will give you the door or pay you a fee for a week, and do completely unannounced, word-of-mouth shows for a 1 or 2 week stand. it has to fly way beneath the radar. and while the musicians and crew won't get their day rate, they will at least get their expenses (cabs etc.) covered and have a little change. it is a scarifice for everyone, but if explained, it will accomplish the task without jeopardizing the mission. even a free show like the the recent one in the park, while it makes better sense financially, is viewed by future promoters as a threat to future draws. and if you cannot rely on higher guarantees in her proven markets, your ability to create a tour that spans the country, reaching softer but important markets (DET, PHI, BOS, CLE, MIA,SEA and states like TX, NC, IN, OH), not to mention all of of France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the UK, where she has the potential to outperform her US markes) is hampered before you even get out the gate. you are correct that set-up is crucial... meshell has not had a well-timed, well-supported release in a very long time for many complicated reasons (with not knowing how to do it not being one of these reasons). carefully building a pre-release
promotional tour that does not undercut the effectiveness of a post-release tour is critical .
peace

I'm enjoying the heck out of these new songs.. makes me wonder what Meshell has been listening to. There is a serious metalhead vibe on some, "Point of no Return" could easily be on a Metallica album. I'm also reminded of the era of great black alterna-rock like Fishbone and Living Colour.

Thanks again for putting this up, its a real treat.

One question - the version I am listening to has some buzz in the background, is this on all versions or did something go wrong when i DL'd or burned it?

Thats what i figured, Derek, but thanks for the info.

I only really notice it between songs or when the volume is low. And mostly its a recording I want to crank up really loud, so thats fine.

Anybody else agree with me on the serious Metalhead influences on some of the new tracks?

I'm KICKING myself for not being able to catch that Annex show last year! Between that audio clip there and the video clip of the Annex show that is on http://www.myspace.com/officialmeshellndegeocello it really sounds like that show was a mind blower! Does anyone know if the WHOLE Annex show was recorded? So far these two snippetts are all i could find...

Hey all - I did some VERY basic noise reduction on these tracks and was able to eliminate that awful high pitched buzzing for the most part. Enjoy!

Thank you Chris Smile

If there's any way to combine tracks 1&2 and 4&5, that would be stellar... that way when they come up randomly on my iPod, they won't go to the next song without playing Michael's incredible guitar solos...

Thank you again, either way. Great work.
