I live in Milan, Italy, a place where getting news about soul, jazz & funk music is a hard job. So you can imagine how easier my life became from the day I discovered Freemyheart. What a breakthrough! Finally reaching all sort of stuff about my beloved Meshell!
I took a look at the tour dates and immediately decided to go to Paris. I entered the Elysee Montmartre at 19.30, and felt really exited. That place was perfect to enjoy music, a dark hall with marvellous decò carved faunus coloured by red spot lights on the ceiling. People was waving as I stepped in and farther towards the stage . Then, a big dreadlocks mountain went on stage with vinyls under his arm with this big smile on his face. He opened with a deejay session with Eleanor Rigby and made us dance for an hour with stuff like Chaka Khan’s I feel for you and Dizzy’s Night in Tunisia ( I’m so sorry I didn’t catch his name, but I’m sure some of you can tell me who this guy performing with The Brethren is). Plantation Lullabies caught everybody by surprise as the band took his place on a pitch dark stage. Just a moment to realise that the groove was alluding to The Way and she came in velvet jeans with her eyes hidden under a rasta cap visor. She sang. It was magic! At this time, I felt so proud to realise everything I imagined about her was true. My God, the vibre she gives is so strong! Her carisma was capturing every pore of my skin. They were grooving with heart and rigor, ruled by Meshell in the dark while K’Alyn weaving to her voice. You know, she perfectly acts as if she would say things she’s too shy to say! She’s stays away from light, she’s fragile, she sends the same message as in Bitter’s cover. At the same time, she’s a tough one and her richness overwhelms you as a cathedral. So, they performed a Quentin Mack version very similar to that KCRW’s Matthew put on the site. She mostly sang, but you could see her expression changing when picking up the bass to pump incredible grooves as Deadnigga, Soul Record, Stay. She gave us a thrilling version of Wasted Time and Earth during which she offered bunches of orange roses to the crowd. After two hours of pure happiness she said she was tired and reprised Deadnigga to say goodbye. I sat down on the floor to unwind, before testing the sparkling breeze of Rochechouart blvd, thinking I really envy those who had seen Meshell many times. Here in Italy is very difficult to have that kind of artists (I used to be a jazz & blues singer and decided to gave up ‘cause I could not survive in this country I really want to thank Matthew a million time I wish everybody a joyfull 2003.
