I'm just back from Massy (15 km from Paris) where the SMJ was playing tonight. Small but crowded place : about 250 people (even some young girls of about 6 or 7 years old : one was staring to chris dave, tapping in rythm on the scene's ground : funny to watch !) A new sax player joined the band instead of Oliver Lake but I didn't catch his name. the rest of the band was as usual : chris Dave, DJ Sundance, Mickael Cain, Ron Blake and of course Meshell. It sounded like one of their best shows to me : even if some technical problems occured, and if the new horn player seemed to have some difficulties sometimes to get in the mood, but it was OK : he had a very different approach from O. Lake and I really appriciated some of his melodies. The Meshell and C Dave duet was once more breath-taking. I especially loved the great version of the Fela tune (as always) and the one of Dance of the Infidels (very bluesy) as well as the Ron Blake's song : really a masterpiece : this will make me buy his album as soon as it's out, in the stores. They also played tonight their best version of Al Fataq : I had difficulties with this tune, the first time I heard it, in july, but tonight's was relly good to me ! The set seemed just a little shorter than usually, but the audience managed to make them come twice for the encores (Luqman and another tune they also played in Créteil). Meshell and the band stayed after the show talking with the audience and signing posters and taking photos :it was very kind of them ! So here it is ! That's about all I can say about it with my poor english ! The next time will be in Paris again, at La Cigale in May : 2 month... so long, already ! Oh by the way : Happy Birthday to you, Michael Cain ! Post Scriptum : I don't know if DJ Sundance read what we talked about in the Polylogue, but during his introduction he played the radiohead tune "Everything in its right place" we tmentionned a few days ago... Funny coinncidence ! | ||
