so...i JUST came across two clips of part of Meshells 2005 Montreal Jazzfest performnace with Pat Metheny on guitar (see "Luqmon" and "Invocation" tracks 2 & 3 of the attached...)

with the current buzz around the new record i initially wasn't going to post these right away (i was gonna post them eventually, but you know...i wanted to help keep the focus on the NOW record)...

...anyway after converting to Mp3 for folks I was gonna put em on a cd for my car as well. But since i only had these two songs, I then started looking around my (unorganized) music collection to see what other snippets from that Spirit Music era i might have that i hadn't listened to in a while that i could use fill out more space...

i came across two clips...interviews and performances (that i'm sure i originally heard through links here at FMH)...

one interview/performance is track#1 on the attached...

the other is track#4 on the attached...
there's the 'rewind/fastforward' part...at about 15:08 into the track you'll hear something that will 'tie it all together' and bring the 'past to the present' which was enough for me to say 'yeah NOW i can post this!"...Smile )

enjoy...

BTW matt, thanks for that link to WNYC on the frontpage matt...that was a nice snippet to ease the pain of fact that i can't make it to NYC to to the actual Hiro gig tonight. (how about that new groove break in Evolution...funky and cool...i dig it Smile)

thanks derek for the download
hey matthew, keep up the good work with the site...its great

the hiro show was great in my opinion
first, she started on time around 10pm...which was beautiful.
She started with a song called "Wilderness" then went into a slew of other songs not on any her albums (that I know of)
She brought it back with (in no particular order)
Lovely Lovely
Sloganeer
Evolution
Shirk
Article 3
Michelle Johnson
A Different Girl

Her first (and sadly only) encore consisted of another song not on the album
All said and done, she finished around 11:40pm
She appeared to be in good form, happy spirits.
The band played well.

PS. She did mention the song writer/band of the other songs once but couldn't make it out. If anyone knows who these people are , please let me know so I can support these amazing songs.

She announced "Wilderness" is a Joy Division song. Two of the other songs in the set she said were by Deantoni Parks (the drummer on the record). One was the encore, a kickin four-on-the-floor tune, and the other was a realllll hard grooving tune with a behind-the-beat straight 8th bass line over a triplet-y tom/kick drum groove.

deantoni parks will be joining her for a few of the upcoming shows to play drums. (haynes will be back, don't worry Smile

deantoni parks's band "kudu" will also be opening for meshell at some of the upcoming shows...

i'm really excited about seeing him play. i've heard rumors about him being the best drummer out there right now.

Thanks for the tracks, Derek!

Track 2 though is actually Part 2 of "Al-Falaq" (not "Luqman").

The song that became "Solomon" was announced on that tour as "Red Planetary Skywalker".

Getting a little nostalgic about that tour Smile Then again, "the past is never to return."
