Rhino puts out these fun boxed sets for each decade (as a child of the 70's i own the limited edition set they originally released for that era titled "Have a Nice Decade: The '70s Pop Culture Box" (It's great fun and a nice little time capsule. the limited edition set i have came covered in an authentic pea green shag carpeted box with the plastic covering that was popular on furniture in those gloriously creative AND equally cheezy times...)

Rhino also released a similar boxed set for the 80's which i dont own, but have seen...(its coverd in swatch watch like rubber)...

and i was in a record store today and saw another set that covered the 90's ..it's called "Whatever: The '90s Pop and Culture Box" and it obviously covers the not so distant 90's...(this 90's set comes in a box filled with 'coffee beans' as that was the time when coffee shop craze seemed to really kick into overdrive again...

anyway, to get to the Meshell reference...as we know this was the era where she burst on the scene (at least, thats when i first became aware of her anywayz Smile...and her breakout debut hit..."If That's Your Boyfriend, He Wasnt Last Night" is one of the songs on the 90's boxed set. What i like about these sets is, while licencing constraints often restrict many songs & artists from being included, Rhino still manages to get a wide range of tunes from different genres and different levels of 'appreciation'...meaning you'll hear some genuinely great pivotal 'classics' (like "Boyfriend" and others in this set), and you'll ALSO hear some genuinely 'cheezy' tunes that were popular at the time (for whatever reasons Smile). Its all about personal preference anyway, and hey, what i call 'cheeze' is another persons 'genuine classic', and vice versa...and in the end, combined together it ALL makes for fun listening & remenicing...I'll probably buy the 90's set for my son (he was born in the mid 90s so he didnt actually recall most of these these personally, but he loves watching those 'I love the 90's' shows on VH1 so he'll get a kick out of them...
