i do so hate this question, but to be honest i have contemplated it before, and for some time. i have been a "disciple of her gospel" (i'm certain meshell would hate that term) since the days of "plantation lullablies". but my favorite would have to be "peace beyond passion". i purchased "peace beyond passion" as soon as i learned of its release and was again, truly moved by the music that is meshell. but truth be told, it took me about a year and half to really "get" it; what she was saying. it really threw me, for meshell and i are near the same age, and at the time of "passion"'s release, i was 26. so when i really began to "get" this album (27 near 28 years old), i thought to myself, "well what the hell have i been thinkin' about all this damn time!?!!?" understand, i was well on the road (and am still working at it) to shaping my own spirituality and embarking on my personal communion with my God. i was coming to the realization that the spirituality i had was "borrowed" or "lent" to me by my parents. so when i turned 18, i was to take that "borrowed" spirituality and work with it - try it, study it, bend it, kick it, test it, trust in it, pray on it, eveb turn my back on it - everything to see if, as an adult, it worked for me and then make it my own. if not, then find a spirituality that did. for my parents' spirituality worked for them, so it only makes sense that they teach this "functional" spirituality to their children. so when i finally "got" (understood) "passion", i was like, "damn, that's the sh_t i'm working on; she already 'got' it, so i must be going in the right direction!!". i mean, think about it: anyone whose first verse provocatively annouces, ",... maybe judas was a better man, and mary made a virgin just to save face,...", don't you think they're trying to tell you to go and read the Bible for yourself and not rely on what others have been merely "tellin'" you what it says?!? this iconoclastic album is the bomb. meshell smacks so many topics honestly on this album, and not just her spirituality. although in my opinion, her spirituality is the driving force behind "passion". i apologize for the length of this entry, but i felt the need to disclose why "peace beyond passion" is such a profound album to me. my remaining favorites would fall thusly: 2)comfort woman 3)cookie (2 and 3 are constantly battling for that second position) 4)plantation lullabies 5)bitter. ,... thanks for your patience.
