Question:
It's still a little early to be voting, because it's typical for an album that's just released to get more votes than normal.

I think this is different though since this is basically Me'Shell's first "feel good" album (at least according to the critics.)

Feel free to post why, in what order, etc in replies to the poll as well Smile

Choices:
Comfort Woman
Cookie: The Anthropological Mixtape
Bitter
Peace Beyond Passion
Plantation Lullabies

I love all five of her albums but I voted for Bitter as #1 but really I think it's a tie between Bitter and Comfort Woman then 2nd place would be a tie between Peace Beyond Passion & Cookie then Last is Plantation Lullabies.

Wow....I guess I am one of the few who voted for Plantation Lullabys. I like all of them of course, but P.L. just hit me soooo hard when I heard it. I jumped on her bandwagon in 1993 when I first heard it, then saw her in concert at the Park West in Chicago that year. I knew immediately that she was a true artist and I was blown away by her sense of consciousness, her sensuality, and of course her music and writing ability. She came along at a time when every artist was sounding the same to me. No one was sincere in their music and the music had no feeling nor true meaning. Even my man Prince was letting me way down at that time. So I have to vote for P.L. because of its impact. It (and she), got me back into music full stride.

Peace and Love

I voted comfort woman. While I think in the long run, Bitter will take the crown again (although I still say that I can't play Bitter all the time. Too beautiful to play every day.), CW is so easy to play, so easy to live with. I'm listening to it at least once every day (and trust, when you run a record store, you DREAD listening to the same records over and over again). if any of her albums could get mainstream love, it's this one...

yeah, that's the strange thing. "bitter" is my favorite album of all-time by any artist, but "comfort woman" is now my favorite artist by meshell.

don't ask me to explain... i can't.

and yes, i agree. this is definitely an album i can see getting some success if given the chance (moreso than anything she's released previously.)

it's too bad the list price is $18.98, and that there don't seem to be any plans for late night talk show appearances...

while meshell may respect sade (i've no idea), i wouldn't be surprised if she'd not want to be thought of/marketed as the 2nd coming of sade (too one dimensional)... but as much as the critics are comparing "comfort woman" to something sade might release, i think both maverick and meshell may have missed a huge opportunity here by not pushing this more than they have already as what it is... a love album.

however, with devoted people like julie around, i think that if we can just get some minimal airplay for one track, that we could turn "comfort woman" into jill scott's first album. (which seems to me that it was such a huge success mostly due to the lyrical content... *love* songs.) "comfort woman" is as melodic, and cato and meshell both did a wonderful job on the voice arrangements... i believe this is her first album where all of the voices you hear (or are credited) are her's.

they'll have to lower the list price though. people will buy this album through word of mouth if they don't have to pay $18.98 in november.

and by lowering the list price of comfort woman (and cookie, for that matter), you're getting people hooked on meshell, causing people to go back and buy her other 4 releases...

ah, such is wishful/naive thinking...

i just want this album to be heard. as much as i love her other albums, this one really needs to be heard... we could use more songs like these.

anyways...

I would definitely have to Say BITTER! That album has so much feeling and depth. If I had to choose #2, it would be COMFORT WOMAN. I agree with SoulSike, BITTER is too beautiful to play everyday. I love all her albums though.

My favorite Me'Shell album if I had 2 choose 1 would be "Bitter" even though I love each Me'Shell album. It's difficult 2 say that I prefer one 2 another 'cuz they're all so good in their own way. She has that writin' skill that very few artist has. 2 me she's the female Prince but cleverer 'cuz she's never been a slave 2 her record company like he's been 2 Warner Bros. 'til he started 2 do his stuff on his own.
CW is very good but I think it's better live after listenin' 2 the live trax u put 2 download b4 the album came out. I think there's 2 much sound fx but I have 2 listen 2 it more.
We can't wait 2 c her here in Paris, France, Europe.
Long live 2 Me'Shell who strives 2 do her stuff! Peace & love!
Cyril

I guess i am in the minority, cuz Cookie is definately my favorite, without a doubt. Althoug i love bitter just as much as the rest of you guys, i can really appreciate the messages from Cookie and the mix tape affect, so one feels like they r getting a taste of the best that she has to offer. But for now, Comfort woman is coming in a close second for favorite from me'shell.

another reason "comfort woman" and "bitter" are my 2 favorite, is because i can actually get away with singing to them straight through... Smile

I voted for Bitter because the arrangements are so beautiful. But any other day, I might say that Peace beyond Passion is my favorite because of its spiritual vibe that I feel so deeply. Worship

it's interesting that most people seem to be able to choose a favorite. i can't. i honestly can't.

my favorite was peace beyond passion, until cookie...which, while completely different, i thought definitely rivaled it.

but now, with comfort woman...which i think is lush and gorgeous and brilliant...i simply cannot choose. i love them all. they are each from a different era of her life, and each has had a different meaning for different eras of mine. for me, choosing a favorite is simply not possible.

Way to go JD.

Preach!! Preach!!

and don't for get "Sweet Love" and "Outside Your Door" to change the tempo and hit you from another angle.

Oh and that deep poem set to that track which so accurately described how I felt about who I was with at the time.

P.L. P.L. P.L.

Big Grin

Peace & Love

i dug every album accept 'cookie', but it was for personal reasons, not musical ones...i was growing in a different direction personally and that album was something i couldn't connect with...still can't...lot of jive going on, i had to deal with...

but got reconnected with comfort woman...didn't know how much i missed her...nice to be reunited...got much comfort from her vibe...like the vulnerability and openness on the album...

can't say i have a fave...all of them spoke to me in some part of my life...on each album i can tell you exactly what i was dealing with and what i felt...the woman has a gift direct from yah...no artist has ever touched my spirit, like she do...

ok, well, i want to say bitter because that is the one that really made me want to know more about her. i had heard of her thru "if he was ur boyfriend he wasnt last night" and levitcus: faggot, and while i liked those songs they didnt affect me as much as bitter did. Then cookie came out....i LOVE that cd...now comfort woman....it is beautiful! so all that to say bitter i guess, but its hard to choose. oh so hard!

First of all must say that i'm enthralled by Comfort Woman, it's magical...BRAVO Meshell.

I wasn't feeling Cookie as much as the previous albums...but this is definately a masterpiece.

My favourite is still: Peace beyond Passion it was my entrée to her musical dreamland and although Bitter held the #1 spot for long PBP eventually emerged to regain its place.

My new top 5:
1. Peace Beyond Passion
2. Bitter
3. Comfort Woman
4. Cookie
5. Plantation lullabies

I too voted for Plantation Lullabies, it's my all time favorite. I, of course, like all of her stuff but it's just something about dredlock and diggin you like an old soul record that take me back.

I'm with Groove Thang...i honestly can't pick ONE favorite. I really can't. Each does it for me in different ways...each affected me uniquely according to where i was in my own life at the time (and where Meshell was too i suppose).

Ok, so i copped out and can't pick my OWN single favorite Meshell cd...

BUT...i will say this...if i were only allowed to pick just ONE of her records to hand out to folks in general to listen to it would most likely be Comfort Woman.

Peace Beyond Passion really blew my mind, and still does to this very day. The woman has a knack for not only grabbing you with the words, but the music has messages in it also. The way a she plays certain notes just underscores what it is she's trying to say.

This was a fight for me to choose PBP over Bitter, they're running real close. I'll probably regret my pick tomorrow and say that Bitter should be first. It's hard to say any of her albums are better than the rest when, as far as I'm concerned, she can't go wrong!!!

My college roomate gave me a promotional copy of PL that she had been given on Spelman's campus stating, "this is more your thing than mine." Stunned by its forthright eleganece, this album will always be a reminder to me that a revolutionary act can be mindful and artistic.

Worship Cookie Is defintely my favorite! Worship
Even though I love all of this woman's music - Cookie really displayed Me'Shell as a multi- talented artist - not just a terrific bassist but a diverse writer as well- not to mention a voice that'll make you smack someone!
