labell, i think i am going to have to agree with you on this. as much as it pains me. i am praying that talent will win out and meshell will finally be recognized. if she wins, folks will hear me a block away. but that ashanti, i believe walked away with 6 or 7 billboard awards. i will save my grammy tirade for after the show.
in reading all the nominees, i am sure it will be a very disappointing night.
if she does not win this will be the general consensus Confused

...when folks were trying to petition the Aretha Franklin honorary award that homegirl was getting? I was hollering. I mean, you have to understand, it isn't that I harbor actual ill will toward Ashanti. Hell, in the context that singing is passing for these days, she's money. But all the accolades have me trippin'.

She certainly deserves props for being the most goddamned ubiquitous artist in the business in 2002, but she's about as talented as Alicia K(see, here I go. I said I was going to bed because I felt the surlyness coming. Must be all that red meat I had for dinner making me aggressive....'night, I'm out. )

but alicia can actually write music, produce music, and play an instrument... so as much as i dont love alicia keys... i gotta give her credit for that. as far as i know, ashanti cant do any of those things. the fact that ashanti is being compared to meshell ndegeocello is so hilarious... thinking about it feels like a nuclear bomb going off in my head.

regarding the whole voting thing for the Grammys.
in order to vote for the Grammies u have to be a member of Naras and have your name credited on at least 6 musical releases that are "commercially available" . many companies whould rather give their employees or people who will vote for their releases credits on albums - we are talking back back background vocals , choir duties , uncalled for technical stuff etc ... - then these people vote for the record label's releases ...
also mind u that the grammies are broadcast by cbs ... 'nouf said ...
not all members of naras get to vote - there are several categories in which u can be a member of naras but don't have voting permission . in order to be nominated u must be a member of naras .

hope this helps

please remember that the billboard awards are awarded by commercially successful attributes ( record sales and radio airplay etc ...) unlike the grammies . that's why miss ashanti won all those awards - hey she sells records and gets airplay . now that lady of soul thing is FAR beyond me ... dead nigga blvd anyone /????

Me'shell should have already one a grammy in 1994. Mad

All these "new" R&B artist who don't even write their own albums don't have their own I.D. !
I don't get it.. Why does that work?
Its so fake! From the hair to the vocal lines!!!

Confused

Let me tell you something peeps...
Most of the times the producer puts a vocoder in the mix to keep the notes straight. Maybe you didn't know... Most the young artists that are in the charts now just get a producer from the record label, they come it when the producer is ready with the track. (read not the artist NO the producer writes..) He/she knows what needs to happen, then the "star" comes in and records line after line on (most of the time) a sampled beat.
No live intruments at all. That can be alright though but I don't agree in the way the "artist" sells millions of singles , based on a fake image when theres so much great music on this planet!

I believe in live music. Honest, from the heart In Love...
Or at least written by the artist and maybe
also produced! You know what I mean.

And Me'shell is pure Emotion live in your ears!!! Its all original.. She comes real,
no bull-ish

I have MAD respect for artists like her!

If she wins or not; dont matter..
SHEs MY NUMBER ONE ARTIST !!! Worship

I'm sorry I get carried away..
I'm an artist myself, and the biz is soooo tough.

PS If there are any mistakes in this note ex-cuse
me I'm Dutch-Italian... Cool

PEACE
CHAR'LOT (yeah my real name!)

Congratulations Me'shell. I'm very pleased that the excellent work on this abulm has been acknowledged. Hopefully, those who are in a position to cast a vote will vote on the artistry and not on how many records were sold. Good Luck

i know, right!? i think that people just have this block in their brains against anything slightly out of the ordinary...

yet people CAN say those phonetic names on musiq soulchild's album.... and they can say the name of outkast's first album. i guess those words arent -GASP!- FOREIGN.

i'd just like to point out that ndegéocello is reeeeeeeeeally completely phonetic. sigh.

So the award was announced earlier in the day ?

I was hoping to at least see her name on the screen as a nominee... like a subliminal hint to the world, "Cookie was among the best contemporary r&b albums of the year you never heard ..cop that."

Hoping against hope for that last ditch opportunity to wake the sleeping masses...

oh well....welcome to the future of music ...

i wasn't really thinking she would win (at all...)

i mean, contemporary r&b... floetry & me'shell's albums had no place in that category... me'shell can write contemporary r&b if she wants, but cookie was not contemporary r&b by today's standards... petey pablo as best rapper? lauryn hill as best female rapper? the categories are still messed up...

there's next year Smile

I really never once considered a Norah Jones sweep. I was totally convinced it would be Ashanti. And while I imagine EMI is patting itself on the back for what was quite transparently an internal voting block put to work, I would also imagine that Blue Note staffers who are aware of the label's jazz pedigree are quietly retching and looking for windows to jump out of. And considering that Norah doesn't play the sitar, why does it matter that she is the (estranged) daughter of Ravi Shankar (forgive my spelling if that's wrong)???

Anyway. Let me get back to picking this here cotton. I'm sure I have some memo or status report to type...
