Clap The National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences, Inc. has nominated Cookie: The Anthropological Mixtape as one of the 5 finalists for Best Contemporary R&B Album. (Albums containing 51% or more playing time of vocal tracks.)
The others nominated in the same category were Ashanti Ashanti, Full Moon Brandy, Faithfully Faith Evans, Floetic Floetry.
Winners will be announced in New York on Sunday, February 23rd. (Complete list of nominations)

Worship Me’Shell personally has been nominated previously 6 times for Grammys. This is her 7th Grammy nomination (3 out of 4 albums have been nominated for Best R&B Album!)

Four in 1994:
1994 - Best Pop Vocal Collaboration - Wild Night
1994 - Best Female R&B Vocal - If That's Your Boyfriend (He Wasn't Last Night)
1994 - Best R&B Song - If That's Your Boyfriend (He Wasn't Last Night)
1994 - Best R&B Album - Plantation Lullabies

Two more in 1996:
1996 - Best R&B Performance by Duo or Group - Never Miss The Water
1996 - Best R&B Album - Peace Beyond Passion

Also:
1996 - Best Engineered Album - Peace Beyond Passion, Bob Power.
(Which does NOT count towards her nominations though.)

In my book you have already won...but it would be nice to get the darn thing and get up on stage to accept it and speak your mind.

Not trying to hate but why is Ashanti up for everything?

well the Grammys have a history of ignoring the groundbreaking, soul baring artists and giving the award to the one's with the most sales. For me it's a personal thing. The artists I enjoy greatly, rarely win. Almost the same with politics. Actually it IS the same with politics...

what if they really give the award to the most deserving artist?
i think that would be incredibly significant, considering the times... and how outspoken this album is, even compared to her others...particularly politically. that would be making a STATEMENT! i would be so ecstatic..

i'm curious, does anyone know what the formula is for picking the winner? how much of it is based on record sales? or does it vary?

i wish i could voteSmile

i'd love to see an acceptance speech from meshell... she seems so incredibly gracious and humbleSmile

that brings me back to seeing her on leno.... !!!! that was so GREAT...i was so moved by her passion and inSISTANCE that she get at least a few potent words in at the end...

CONGRATULATIONS to Meshell and the other gifted artists (SHOUT OUT TO CATO! Worship lol) on cookie !!!!!!!!!

That's news to my ears. I'm estatic for her nomination. Even though it's not about the awards and the industry accolades, it shows that there are people out there other than the hardcore set listening to her music.

Is there anyway we can all vote for her so she can win? she needs our suport! I wonder why her album Bitter was not nominated! does anyone know how many albums that Cooke was sold? Matthew, have you seen Meshells concerts within the last 2 years? Have you met her in person at all in the past 2 years. Not me, due to my knee injury, I am disabled right now. Hopefully things will get better. Peace, Jackie Drexler Brooklyn, NY

no.

i believe she has it.

>I wonder why her album Bitter was not nominated!
you and every other admirer of me'shell.

>does anyone know how many albums that Cooke was sold?
as i said in the other thread you started on this subject, i've put in a request for that information. it's highly doubtful anyone else would know...

>Matthew, have you seen Meshells concerts within the last 2 years?
yes.

good question... i can't think of very many "contemporary r&b albums" that feature more than 49% of the album with no vocals...

It's sort of like Denzel and the Oscar thing, Me'shell should have a whole row of them for making truly good music.

That's good to hear! Hopefully, this time they'll go off of talent and not popularity.

The only way that it is based off of record sales is when a person is voting for a particular genre that they have no clue about and picks the person that they have heard the most about. Hence, certain rappers being picked when others are clearly more talented. In order to become a member of NARAS, you have to have your name credited on a certain amount of albums. I think that it is 3. Then you pay your dues and you become a member. There are certain categories where that has to be your main line of work and others where anybody in the Academy can pick.

Hope this helps.

The 45th Annual Grammy Awards will be held at Madison Square Garden in New York City and will air on the CBS Television Network from 8 - 11:30 p.m. (live in the East, tape delayed in the West) on Sunday, February 23, 2003.

It is unknown at this time if Me’Shell will attend/perform/etc.

The person I spoke with this morning at NARAS said he hoped to be in touch with Me’Shell’s manager today, so let’s all keep our fingers crossed Big Grin

You know what?

I'm pleased that she gets yet another nomination for her(by that I mean everyone involved) stellar recordings and aural manifestations. It is, once again, a chance for the recording industry that I partake in to recognize what cannot be argued as a remarkable achievement.

But...

Do not set your hopes too high or set them upon people who cannot see; who in fact do not want to see this light.

Personally, I have had no real interest in award shows for some time. I recognize what promotional benefits they serve. I just feel that most of those shows are popularity contests. In that vein, you should already know what I think will happen.

But...

I always remain open and hopeful that people wake up; see the light; catch a glimpse; rise up (pun intended, for those who know)

Congrats, Meshell.
From your little brother Kael (way to go; smack them across the face wit it...; in a loving way-lol)

God's Love and Blessings
KM

it brought a smile to my face!

I know awards don't REALLY mean too much, and knowing the history of awards shows, I do not wanna get my hopes up too high for a win.

But wouldn't a win be great?! I mean, judging from some interviews, I know that accolades & recognition are definitely not what drives Meshell to create...but as for ME, call me selfish but damnit I want the WORLD to recognize how amazing he sh#t is! Yes a win would make MY day dammit Smile

When you think about it though, even the fact that Cookie was even NOMINATED is a great statement about Cookie's potentcy when you think of the limited industry airplay/promotion it actually recieved in comparision with the other nominees.

I cant really speak to the other nominee's albums because I haven't heard them in their entirety, but I think it goes without saying that the Grammys would do ITSELF a credit if Meshell ends up winning this. We all know it's LONG overdue and WELL deserved.

but whatever happens...

Congrats Meshell! and thanks for sharing your gifts with us girl!!

fingers crossed...

derek

It's the Alicia Keys Syndrome all over again, she'll(Ashanti) will probably take home most of the grammy's, sad.

...to an artist like MeShell? She stikes me as the kind of artists that values what her fans think...not some awards committee. I feel she is past due for recognition tho.....way overdue.

It's been a while since I was told the exact number and the exact process. Yes, any kind of album as far as I know. I am not sure if a certain amount has to be on major distributor or not. I have not been near the industry in a while.

Dang, I feel dumb. I had the complete list of Grammy nominations there on my desk all day but was so dismayed by all the crappy representations that I threw the list out and never got to see Me'Shell's honor until I signed on a minute ago.

I'm kinda conflicted. I'm not even going to go into the profanity-laden tirade about the Grammy's yet again, but y'all feel me. Recognition is always great -- and much the way an Oscar can possibly raise your stock in the film industry (unless your name is Cuba Gooding and/or you breakdance during your acceptance speech), winning a Grammy can further an artist's personal access, leverage, and income in many ways. But we all know that it doesn't always turn out like that. Not to mention, Me'Shell's work speaks for itself and is so consistently and ludicrously overlooked/underrated that a Grammy at this point would almost be a dis. You know? Like, "oh, NOW y'all wanna give somebody some props."

I dont' know. I'm sleepy and I suspect I'm babbling. :-) Holla at y'all lata.

...uh yeah - get ready for "The Ashanti Show." I hope she invests in some nice sequin-laden Easy Spirits because she's going to get quite a bit of walking in. And with that, I must sequester myself before my Inner Tamika comes out and pours a bucket of Haterade on Miss Ashanti.
