I got my CD in the mail yesterday! YAY! Amazon France only took 6 days to ship. That's really fast for international mail! The EP is soooo good! I love how MeShell's music is constantly evolving and changing. She's not afraid to try new styles.
Oh and for those who don't want to do international sales, Amazon US is now doing pre-orders for the import for $11.98 with a release date of 11/28: Updated link This message has been edited. Last edited by: matthew, |

sattva... actually, all thanks go to the members of this forum. otherwise i may not have even learned about the EP.
i fear there are a lot of other admirers of hers that stop visiting the site because the news is so infrequent when it shouldn't be. although i realize that's just how meshell does her thing, it's still frustrating since all we're trying to do is support her. anyways, welcome back |

OK lets talk some more about this "Article 3" EP...
first...ya'll KNOW we're spoiled right? I mean really...how many fans get to hear recordings of new songs done LIVE by their favorite artist before the studio versions are available? And we KNOW Meshell kicks SUCH ass live that its its almost not fair...her live stuff ususally just blows everybody else out of the water. Think about that Zurich set we got to hear...whew...explosive stuff...ALL of it, including that killer live version of 'the sloganeer'. As you know, the studio version of that same tune is also on the 'article 3' EP...so we get to listen to the studio version AND a live version of 'the sloganeer' back to back pretty much simultaneously. For me that is SUCH a treat. Its always extremely exciting for me to hear what types of changes Meshell makes to tunes when she plays them live. different textures she incorporates or removes, alternate arrangements or tempos...it just makes things so alive and i love that shit to death. Its almost like i look at the studio versions as the 'foundation' or 'body' and heart of the songs...and then when she plays them live she puts different 'clothes' onto the 'bodies' of the tunes reflecting her state of mind that night...these 'clothes' or outfits tend to evolve and change depending on their environment and her vibe at that particular moment...when she's in a mellow introspective mood she may put that type of 'outfit' onto a tune live...and when she's in a more intense mode she might throw a more aggressive outfit onto a tune live...maybe she's in a fun and gregarious mood so she might put a more 'quirky' outfit on a song...all the while the 'body and heart' of the tune inside maintain and keep it all together. Its just plain fun and thrilling for me to hear that type of evolution in her stuff. I mean, even between the 'Rome' show an the 'Zurich' show you can hear how the texture and 'outfits' changed on some of some of the tunes that were played in both gigs. I just get off on that... (obviously so yeah...its cool to get to hear the studio versions right next to the live versions when you have an artist of meshells caliber handling things...but back to the studio stuff in particul ...the 'article 3' ep... 1."haditha": this is an intro 'vibe setting' type of track...there's an eerieness and ominous feel about it to me due to the subject matter (prophecies about the 'end of times' and stuff). Structurally, like m said earlier, it wouldn't have been out of place on cookie. its a perfect set-up for the next track... 2."the sloganeer": immediately pulsing & churning and in your face. here the rythym of this tune is almost techno or new wave-esque, maybe a dash of punk...very straight ahead and uptempo...but it doesn't feel like a techno/punk song per'se...just the speed of it. Deantoni Parks drumming is just full of pulsing energy. Mike Severson's guitars churning along.(his guitar work was a highlight from the Rome show in my opinion). And there's Meshell on bass and vocals. her layered vocals here are really very interesting to me...they kind of float over the churning pulsing music. the lilty floating subtle melody of the different vocal layers on top provide an intriguing contrast and compliment the fast rythyms below. Its so cool. The lyrics are very intriguing on this one too (see m's earlier post in this thread). m also mentioned in an earlier post that this doesn't really sound like anything that meshell has done on her own albums before. i agree with that. While I think we may have seen hints of it before on a few of her side collaborations/projects (though i can't recall specifically which ones at the moment)...but this track is really something unique. Personally i dig the hell out of it...ESPECIALLY after hearing the live version of it back to back against the studio version. 3. "shirk": I haven't heard too many people talk about this one but trust me don't sleep on it! Its a very simple song in a way, (features Pat Metheny & Herve Sambe on acoustic guitars and Davi Viera on percussion). The vocals are the magical thing on this track for me. Haunting and sad melodies. It features Meshell and Oumou Sangare's voices. We all know Meshells voice can have such a wonderful expressive & rich tone to it...so that shouldn't be a suprise really. But before this i had never heard Oumou Sangare's vocals (that i know of anyway) and her voice is just absolutely amazing as well...they weave together JUST right. this is one of those 'perfect little concise' songs. It expresses perfectly what it intended to express and doesn't leave you wanting for anything. A quiet beautiful haunting tune ... a real nice compliment to aggressive track that preceeds it ... and the track that follows it... 4. "article 3" wow...another burner here! very uptempo along the lines of 'the sloganeer'. Deantoni Parks drums kicking and moving you along right away, Thandiswa Mazwai provides some of the vocals (does anyone know what language that Thandiswa is singing at the begining? anyone able to translate the lyrics of her parts?), Davi Viera on percussion...and theres Pat Metheny AND MESHELL both on guitar! (How cool is that? 5."eliptical": also known as "nebula" from the kcrw chocolate city interview (see the "wefunk" portion of the site to listen to the archived interview.) Of all of the tracks on this EP, this one might seem to more closely resemble some of the Meshell music that some Meshell fans may be most farmilar with. Its a spacey soulful funky midtempo groover...nice bubbly perculating Meshell bass line throughout. meshell also providing some vocals and hi hat. Programming by Amatus-sami, Graham Haynes on cornet, Brandon Ross on guitar, Davi Vieira on percussion...and last, but CERTAINLY not least...Sy Smith providing the main vocals. Can i get some love for Sy Smith? (actually I've ben meaning for a long time to post a Sy Smith appreciation thread here on freemyheart...i was listening to some live Meshell tracks from years gone by (i think it was the Comfort Woman tour) where Sy was with Meshell providing 'background' vocals...but Sy's vocals aren't 'just' typical 'background' vocals really...they are more than that...her voice and expression are a perfect fit for some of meshells stuff. she seems to be so 'in sync' with meshells live vibe and comes in at JUST the right time in a song adding different textures and sonic layers and emotion. Especially on the live sets ...its like some of those tunes were just MADE for Sy & Meshell to create together on...i almost couldn't imagine em without Sy's vocals. Anyway, here's to ya SY!) sorry... off on a tangent again..."eliptical" aka "Nebula"...like i said a cool spacey 'groover' of a tune...do go back and listen to the version that was played on Chocolate City radio ...Nedula is longer (about twice as long) and the mix is a little different on each as well (they are the same song but different instruments are brought to the forefront in the two mixes) that raps up the 'article 3' EP...not sure which (if any) of these tracks will appear on her full length album when that comes out...so i grabbed this just in case. (heheh...even if they're ALL on the full length record, i won't be too mad...i mean, its not like i would have been able to KNOW this EP was out there and NOT gotten it, ya know? THANKS again to m and his site and all the folks who share all of this info here on fmh...without ya'll i woulda missed SO much of this music and thats the straight up truth...so i'm sending my sincere gratitude to all o ya'll... ... Right ON people! This message has been edited. Last edited by: derek, |

Hey Derek, I appreciate your breakdowns of the Ep. And I agree with most, but I think songs 1,3 and 5 are partial songs. Remember it's a Ep(Extended play) and anything on it are samples of things to come, give or take. The only songs that seemed possibly full, were #2 and #4(the sloganeer and article 3),the more the most I'll appreciate it all.I'm sure you ,like me ,have loved the albums and the side songs from both soundtracks and other artist as well(I collect it all)still waiting for singles with B-sides and unreleased songs to finally surface. Old or New , bring 'em..................THANKS

Thanks Derek for this nice comments.
In deed this new stuff brings many vibes from Meshell that we didn't know before. It's so cool ! As always some of it can disappoint people (some comments heard at the end of the Paris show indicated that some people have been really surprised by this rocky stuff... But, well, people must understand that when you go to her show, you must be ready to hear brand NEW and unespected music : that's her thing !!) but this is what I love with her : she plays the music she feels, not the one you expect. Anyway, I agree with you : this is just great to listen back to her albums and shows and to compare the version to see how she transformed it. But let me say one more thing to make you a little more frustrated This is really the point with this material : energy. We don't know what will be the LP, (and in any case I will buy it on the first day it's released, as always), but I guess it's gona be different : and that's just exciting ! |

Hopefully by 2/14/07 the full length album will be out. I'll try to find out what the extra track is. It's always worth ordering because it might be a different version than the one on the eventual album...
