I still haven't seen the "Noah's Arc" shows, but was told this morning that "Shirk" is an updated version of "Codependency" (one of the three songs that were on the series.)

So for the people that have emailed me repeatedly wanting those songs, buy the EP. You'll have at least one of them Smile

And for the record, I still have no idea when the other two songs will come out - if ever. Meshell writes a lot of very personal music and a lot of the time it doesn't come out for that reason. I think most of you can understand that Smile

(which should be no problem since they wouldnt be shippinf from france!) or, hell, just get the tracks on itunes and i;ll get at em.

amazon only does super saver shipping to the countries they are based in. amazon.fr does france, amazon.com does usa, amazon.ca does canada, etc.

as for meshell making it difficult for her fans to have the music, i doubt that this what she intends. at the time of the release, she clearly didn't have a domestic distributor for the EP, therefore we non-europeans will have to pay a little more for shipping, or be very patient if they'd like to support her financially.

another way to look at it would be to ask if you appreciate the work i've put into keeping this site updated (as much as i can with as little input i receive) and online (thanks to donations from admirers of meshell like derek and jennifer). if your answer is yes, then think of it as you're getting free shipping and putting the $10 or $11 to keep the site online. i mean, a beer at a club in nyc is $10. a lot of us spend money on silly things like cigarettes or weed. $10-11 for shipping isn't going to break any of us, and it gives us the opportunity to support meshell and tell her record company that we will do so in the future as well.

anyways, that my 2 cents.

So for those that have listened to it, what do you think of the new material?

until someone more creative writes something, here's my take:

1 is an intro only track... sounds like it wouldn't have been out of place on cookie. it features soundbites from a shaykh hamza yusuf speech talking about the prophecies of the prophet muhammad...

2 is unlike anything meshell has ever done. (that we've heard anyways). punk/rock/funk. some people won't be ready. they'll come around Smile

3 is an updated version of "codependency." from what i've heard about the original demo, it was reminiscent of an acoustic version of "liliquoi moon." it's received the "comfort woman" production now... (not sure if that makes sense)

4 is like 2. very rock/punk with mazwai's vocals layered in occasionally. let's just say if deantoni parks ever goes on tour with meshell, i'll fly to at least one of those shows. he makes 2 and 4 very special. you'd never think of pat metheny in a punk/rock track... but he is... somewhere... is it a good sign that i can't tell if it's pat or meshell on guitar? LOL i mean, i have most everything by metheny, but i can't tell if it's him or her... wow.

5 better known as "nebula" from the kcrw chocolate city interview (see the "wefunk" portion of the site to listen to the archived interview.)

the ep comes in at less than 16 minutes... which is torture... then again, it could've came in at 116 minutes and we'd be wanting more... Smile

i'm hoping *hint hint* that the site will get an update from management when a release date is tentatively set for the full album...

until then, these 16 minutes should hold us over nicely until february when we get an earth wind & fire tribute album where it's rumored that meshell will be performing a track. (see the "discography/various artists" portion of the site for info.)

I'm so excited that MeShell is experimenting with punk/rock. She's so eclectic, I just love it!

Actually, not that I at all adhere to genres, but sloganeer has somewhat of a new wave (of the early 80's) feel to it. So far I like it, but I haven't finished listening.

Thing is, I'm always inclined to be biased simply because I love how Me'Shell flows with her muse is whatever direction it takes her regardless of economic repercussions.

I hope it blows up, but at the same time, I kind of don't. Don't want that rawness to get lost. :-)

According to the french magazine Muziq (always around when there's some meshell's new stuff coming), the album's gona be released in february 2007.
They give also an enthusiastic review of the EP.

the editor of that magazine has always been a huge supporter of meshell's. he has several articles in the "museum" portion of the site Smile

that said, keep in mind how it usually goes with her records. don't count on the first tentative date... usually there are delays. not that there will be with this one, but i just don't want anyone to get their hopes up if it's going to be delayed.

i'm curious to know if these songs are going to be on the album... that and meshell likes to rearrage songs (think liliquoi moon, the teaching...), so maybe the EP will have exclusive material?

Yes, I think that Frederic Goaty has been supported her work many times.
I know that the release date of her albums might again be delayed...
I still hope that the EP is a way for Universal to hold people's attention and to say that a vocal album will soon be released.
But maybe i'm wrong... I hope not !

And as you, I'd really like to know more about what the album contains... Same tracks as on the EP, same songs but rearranged or Other stuff...
In any case I know that I'm gona enjoy both of them...
I can't wait !

Hi Everybody!
I'm new here, but have been Meshell's fan for 10 years. Last Sunday I saw her live in Warsaw and bought the EP too. I thought I'll share some impressions. Meshell was announced in Warsaw as neosoul/funk/jazz and she followed a great gig by another bassist/singer Richard Bona (world/jazz). The audience was a bit confused by the punk rock, but younger people got into it very quickly and at the end people were enjoying it immensely and even managed to get Meshell on stage for an encore. Meshell looked different physically than on photographs from 2005. The whole set was a bit improvisational but no doubt you could hear Meshell's genius. The sound in Warsaw was similar to EP, perhaps more funky and uptempo (the EP has one slow and one midtempo piece, reminiscent of her earlier music - these were not played live). I think Meshell's is searching and maybe onto something great - again...
So I am looking forward to her new record, even if it's punk rock, if it's Meshell's punk rock I'm gonna enjoy it!
Finally thank you to creator(s) of this website - what a great resource, pity I discovered it so late.
Cheers,
D.

PS: Meshell's band was NOT the same personnel as EP:
Oren Bloedow - guitar
Mark Kelly - bass (he played maybe 2/3 of time when Meshell was singing, dancing or offstage)
Charles Haynes - drums (he was good!)
Gilmar Gomes - percussion (a happy-face showman - also sang 3 songs with guitar, Brazillian flavour).

hi matthew..

thanks for your posts and your work on this site.

i'm sure meshell doesnt intend to make things difficult for her US fanbase, but my experience is she doesnt make too much effort either. thats fine, really, its her choice and i respect that. but its still frustruating.

for a while i thought maverick was sleeping on her genius, but now that she is on the loose, im beginning to think a lot of it falls on her. you do great work on this site, but its ridiculous that the best online resource on her music is hosted and run by a dedicated volunteer. its ridiculous that she isnt figuring out a way to get her new stuff on itunes, or sold in the US some other way.

i dont mean to gripe too much, im sure it will all work out one way or another, eventually it will come out on a US label or become downloadable or you name it.

mostly, im just broke right now, been out of work for a while and while i could manage to cough up some dough for a CD, spending $21 on 16 minutes of music isnt cutting it for me right now while im trying to keep my belt tight.

im confused about you comment about the $10/11 in shipping helping to keep the site online. if i buy the CD from amazon.fr via your link, how much money actually goes to you? how much goes to meshell or any of the musicians for that matter? i do appreciate the heck out of your site (though i think meshell should start paying you and you shouldnt have to ask for donations) and ill gladly donate when i have some $ to spare. but i cant imagine that amazon.fr actually passes that much on to you for each order, could this really be true?

peace!
andy

hey Darek in Poland, its Derek in the US here Smile...

thanks for the review of the show...i'm really looking forward to catching one of her shows when the tour hits the states again...sounds it'll be a blast...

glad you found this site Darek...its a great one. TONS of Meshell stuff here to keep you busy for quite a while (as a Meshell junkie myself i've been surfing it for years and still manage to find new stuff i hadn't seen before)...its simply got the most comprehensive collection of ALL things Meshell on the web...period.

such as...

interviews and articles spanning Meshells entire career (see the "Museum" section)...

concert & band info (see "Gigography" section)...

album and concert reviews spanning Meshells entire career (see "Rainbow" section and "Gigography" section)...

Video audio clips (see "Wefunk" section)...

The most comprehensive "Discography" you'll find anywhere...

Lyrics to her catalogue of tunes "(see the "Meditations" section)...

The "Polylogue" , a Fourum to keep up with info, fellow fans (you've already found that obviously Smile

and lots more...

The site was created created and is run by our boy "m" (aka "matthew")...he's just a fellow Meshell fan with a unparalelled commitment to helping spread the word on Meshells amazing musical creations. The site has been around in different incarnations since 1996 (10 years?...wholy crap! we need to have an anniversary celebration for ya m!)

again, glad you found the site!

don't feel obligated to, but if you happen to like what you discover here and want to help support all of matthews hard work, there are also several ways that you can SAFELY help support the site & meshell by purchasing through amazon (see "Store" section) and/or donating through amazon (see the "Support" section).

anywayz, again welcome Darek!

i get 4% right now... but that wasn't my point Smile i was trying to give you an alternate way of thinking about what you were spending the shipping costs on so it might be easier for you to do so.

as for meshell and this site, i just don't think she considers the media or online promotion of any kind important. i think that this site falls into that category, unfortunately. sometimes it's upsetting to me (especially when it interferes with getting pertinent information to people in a timely manner). for her it's about the music, and that works for me. i'd rather her be writing new music than not being able to write new music because she's worried about if this site is going to remain online or not. (it is btw.)

i agree with what you say about itunes, etc, but it's possible that universal france (the people she is currently signed to, i think/believe) only has a deal with itunes france, and it may have been overlooked or something at the time the contract was signed (not allowing the songs to be sold via itunes usa.) i really have no idea though. i mean, i don't know why meshell is touring without a keyboard player right now... much less why the songs from the EP aren't being sold on itunes usa.

Derek, thanks for the welcome Smile
Great site, I learnt a lot on my 1st day here. It's also a great place to find related artists - just yesterday I ordered 5 CDs by Rachelle Ferrell, Laurnea, Res, Joshua Redman - all having something to do with Meshell.
So I hope the site keeps going - it's a treasure!

Matthew, read this:
"With every octave leap, Farrell pushed shit higher. Meshell conducted the whole thing with fiercely gunned bass lines that ricocheted across the room. It was an extraordinary moment of artists sharing, converging and forcing one another to bring their A+ game."
Meshell and Rachelle Ferrell together on stage (with Laurnea too), October 6, 2005. Source - your website (reviews of live performances) Clap
As for Res, somebody wrote (on this website I think) that of the neo-soul singers she was the one most influenced by Meshell...
Sorry to disappoint you - no new info here (OK, if you like new info I may describe Meshell's outfit in Warsaw Wink )
Cheers, D.

Hi everybody,

I'd like to send warm greetings to all Meshell's fans on the Polylogue and say a special HALLO to a new person in the team - Darek. I am also from Poland and I find it great, that the group of polish fans on the Polylogue is getting bigger.

I also saw Meshell live in Warsaw last Sunday and I am totally impressed by the show. It was the third time I saw her live and again I have a feeling, that she would always surprise us with something completely new at her shows.

That was Meshell's first time in Poland and I am unbelievable happy about it. I had planned to go to her show to Germany, Austria or France (as I used to do it before), but this time she made us a great suprise and came to play in Warsaw.

I cannot wait to see the next show of Meshell... and I am seriously considering going to one of her other shows in Europe this year.

Cheers,
anka

Hi Anka!
Good to know there is another fan in Poland Wink
Wow - this was your 3rd concert - just 1st here - I missed so many gigs and she may never play this great old music again - dammit!... Seriously thought about Prague next Monday but I just can't make it. On the other hand if I wait a few more weeks she might play some new music again? Just kidding...
All the best!
