i picked up the album at birdland, during the friday night (2 fridays ago) show. hearing the live version of the songs before the album wasnt ideal, but i had an awesome time anyway. meshelle continues to amaze me, especially with her simple but oh-so-funky basslines. she does more with a few notes than some of the "virtuoso's do with a thousand. the only thing ive heard that was remotely similar to what i heard that friday was david murray's fo deuk review? i think it was called. he collaberated with a group of african musicians to create a sound unlike any id heard at the time. i saw them live before i bought the album also. meshelle's bass lines and this spiritual connection to the melodic groove that she seem's to have just takes her music to a place others just cant reach. its really a shame more people dont know what a gifted and special human being she is.

I finally got my own copy of the CD a couple of days ago. I've given it a few spins, and, wow... I LOVE it!! The music, the groove, the atmosphere created as I listen - it all adds up to an A+ effort for me Smile So far, "The Chosen" is a stand-out in my opinion, particularly for the way that Cassandra Wilson transmits Meshell's "voice" in performing the vocals on that song. It's as if Meshell is "there", but she is not singing herself, if you all get my meaning. "Heaven" with Lalah Hathaway on vocals is another hot number on this CD. Hell, I like every single cut on this CD...LOL!

It's still early, but I've just gotta say that I am one happy camper, as I listen to "Dance of the Infidel". It was worth the wait, and then some... I hope that Meshell and co. record/perform more of this music, or material in the same spirit, in the future.

And, I still feel that it's a damned shame that so many folks in the audience at the Chicago show could not open up their hearts/minds/souls and appreciate what Meshell and 'em were layin' down on stage. She didn't have to sing one note, since, in my opinion, the music was speaking for her, and the rest of the band.

OK...Let me get off this rant, and leave it alone. I'll just close by saying, "Buy this record"!
