So Sorry to hear about Don Alias' passing.

He is one of my true favorites. I did not know he played kit until i caught the joni/mingus lp. Yes, LP. Then that video. Saw him playing with many great artists. He was and is an inspiration.

he was part of one of many truly great bands. when someone needed to complete their perfect band, they always included don alias...

case in point, go pick up joni mitchell's "shadows & light" dvd...

don alias, jaco pastorius, lyle mays, michael brecker and pat metheny.

legendary.

he'll be missed.

that dvd opened another world to me. still one of my absolute favorites. also, the don juan record. i think joni brought out the best-- the most melodic and tasteful-- in jaco.

i agree... i feel bad for those that think of joni only as a folk artist and will never give her a listen... and because of that miss out on mingus, don juan & hejira. (and shadows & light)

not to mention the rest of her body of work...

I have a couple audio bootlegs from that same tour that are basically an identical setlist, with a couple older songs not on the dvd/album-- big yellow taxi, last time I saw richard. There's another video, "Refuge of the Roads" from the mid-80's-- different band though. I'd love to see other footage of that band!

"refuge of the roads" is available on dvd now too... still haven't picked that up yet.

i wouldn't mind having every song played on that tour... can't imagine how good "the last time i saw richard" is Smile

back to don alias... there are also quite a few david sanborn "sessions" dvds (not sure if they were released in the states, but they were release region 0 officially in japan (region zero play on all dvd players)

killer line up on that too... don alias, david sanborn, marcus miller, eric clapton, dean brown, steve gadd, ricky peterson (rumored to be the only keyboardist to ever turn down prince to joining his band), gene lake, d'angelo, cassandra wilson...
