Canadian singer Sarah McLachlan has her own opinions on the high costs of CDs, piracy and greed: “The industry needs to listen to what the kids are saying. If they can't afford a CD, I don’t blame them for file-sharing. Lower the damn price!”
McLachlan and her record label, Nettwerk, are pricing her new album, “Afterglow”, 20% below the usual suggested retail in Canada (U.S. prices not set). Other labels seem to be listening. The world's biggest music company, Universal Music, announced last week that it will drop list prices for CDs starting Oct. 7 to help kick-start sales. Virtually all top-line CDs for artists such as Eminem, Blige, 50 Cent and Shania Twain will list for $12.98, down 25% or more from the current $16.98-$18.98. Selling prices could drop as low as $9.98. Meanwhile, Maverick/WBR has set the list price for Me’Shell’s last two albums at $18.98. Nice going. I guess that extra $6 per CD is so that Maverick can recuperate what they’ve never spent on promotion and marketing. |

Thank you for saying that mathew - I'm so glad someone has sense. The price of CD's has risen tremendously- ecspecially since the explosion of hip hop in the main stream (hmmm!) I wonder why
I also thank you for recognizing Me'Shell gets NO marketing - I can't tell you how many people only know her from "If that's your boyfriend"- not that the song wasn't good but in my opinion her musical ability goes WAAAY beyond that song, so I do what I can to promote her and her beautiful music. Stay on 'em Mat! |
